Eights to Avon

The strong Avon No. 1 crew took all honours in the Canterbury Rowing Association’s annual open eights event over a three-mile course from the New Brighton bridge to Kerrs Reach ,on Saturday. Including the Olympic representatives, T. I. Coker and A. J. Earl, with D. E. Lindstrom, another New Zealand representative, in its crew, the Avon combination recorded the fastest time of 15min 31sec for the event to take the honours in this section by a clear margin from the Canterbury No. 1 eight, which recorded 16min 35sec.

This performance also gave the Avon combination a win in the sealed handicap section from Canterbury No. 4.

Ten crews took part in the event, which was rowed in ideal wind and tidal condition.

This contributed to the time being one of the fastest in the event for many years, but Avon, with its fine technique, clearly showed its superiority. Results:—

Fastest times: Avon No. 1,15.31, 1; Canterbury No. 1, 16.35, 2; Avon No. 2, 17.09, 3.

Sealed handicap: Avon No. 1, 15.31, 1; Canterbury No. 4, 15.52, 2; Canterbury No. 1, 16.05, 3.
