The number of registered unemployed rose slightly last month, the Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner) said. It rose by 15 from 851 in mid-November, to 866 on November 29.
But the number employed on special work in government departments dropped from 493 to 267 during the fortnight. The combined total of unemployed and men on special work was still lower than a year ago at 1133 compared with 1323 last year. Decreases in the number of unemployed were recorded in eight districts, the largest being Invercargill with 69, and Blenheim and Napier, both with a decrease of 11. New Plymouth 12 (12), Wanganui 13 (15), Palmerston North 53 (21), Masterton 1 (4), Lower Hutt- nil (nil), Wellington nil (nil), Blenheim 23 (34), Nelson 15 (15), Greymouth 20 (11), Christchurch 5 (7), Timaru 5 (8), Dunedin-Oamani 39 (27), Invercargill 200 (269).
