N.Z. poets on record
An “audio anthology” of New Zealand poetry, recording 35 of New Zealand’s leading poets, will be available before Christmas.
Three people from the English department at the University of Auckland, Mr A. R. B. Smythe, Dr J. Lamb and Miss Jan Kemp, decided to collect and edit a series of tapes to make up the first and only recorded series of New Zealand poetry. “It was felt that the opportunity was open, in a country the size of New Zealand, to “cover the field” of published poets, and that such a collection would be invaluable as a record,” said Mr Smythe. The series is designed at two levels—a double longplaying record for secondary schools and the public, and a single long-playing record for primary schools and children.
Some poets included on the records will be Dennis Glover, Sam Hunt, Janet Frame, James K. Baxter, A. R, D. Fairburn and Jan Kemp, and a Christchurch poet, Barry Southam. All will read a selection of their work.
The group producing the records is Waiata Recordings which will sell them at $6.50 each.
