MINISTER REPLIES
Open debate likely (N.Z. Prtit AttoclaUon) NAPIER, November 26. The Minister of Recreation and Sport (Mr Walding) has indicated that he will debate with the national chairman of War against Recreational Disruption (Mr Robert Fenton) claims made by Mr Fenton yesterday. Mr Fenton yesterday demanded the resignation of Mr Walding as Minister of Sport and Recreation, claiming that he had betrayed his Ministry’s principles by the manipulation of sport to accommodate foreign affairs policies. Mr Walding is also Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs.
If Mr Walding refused to debate the issue publicly, Mr Fenton said, he would be prepared to form a political party in Palmerston North, “to steal Mr Walding’s votes.”
In a telegram to Mr Fenton today, Mr Walding said he was unable, at this stage, to suggest a date for the debate.
“When my programme for this pre-election period is known. I’ll write to you,” Mr Walding told Mr Fenton. “So, it looks as if it’s on,” Mr Fenton said today.
