Low scores in suburban cricket

For the second time in three weeks, only senior A games were played in the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association's competitions on Saturday. Rain early in the morning softened ail wickets and further rain and hail in midmorning prompted the cancellation of all lower grade matches. Scoring in the senior games was slow and in most cases the bowlers were on top. but this is usually the case early in the season. At Heathcote the home side put Woolston Working Men’s Club in to bat. and against medium pacers. T. Seacy and B. Gore, runs were hard to get. P. Muir and M. Campbell, who put on 67 for the seventh wicket, were the only batsmen to show aggression, and they accounted for more than half Woolston’s total of 129. At stumps Heathcote had progressed to 71 for four with B. Murray unbeaten on 28. Gore made 24. and for Woolston D. Quested had three wickets. Sumner is in a good position against Waltham, mainly due to a good double by A. Scott. He made 27 late in the innings to help lift Sumner’s total to 133— the highest of the day. In Waltham’s first innings he found the drying wicket a help and collected six wickets for a meagre 28 runs. F. Clements and L. Cook made valuable runs for Sumner, while P. Old bowled accurately to take four wickets. J. Wilson (28) was the only batsman in Waltham's Innings to reach 20. At stumps his side was struggling at 71 for eight Beckenham, , which has struggled for runs tills season turned the tables on Saturday and had Belfast in trouble. Accurate bowling from M. Fergusson, J. Adams and R, Higgs routed Belfast for 55. With such a small total to chase. Beckenham began with more assurance. The first over produced 14, and aggressive batting from A, Gibson (39). Higgs

(36) and K. Tucker (25) took the total to 120 for eight at stumps R French bowled accurately for Belfast and had six wickets for 41 off 17 overs. Merivale-Papanui was tn a strong position at 99 for three chasing Hornby’s first innings of 118. N. Davidson (50 not out) and four wickets for 27. had a good double M. Willis and J Forde gave him good bowling support and Forde chipped in with 23 in Merivale’s innings. In Hornby’s innings R. Johnson made 28 and R. Wilson 25 and Wilson had two Merivale wickets Scores were: Hornby liB (R. Johnson 28. R. Wilson 25; N. Davidson 4/27, J. Ford 3/22. M, Willis 3/38) met Merivale-Papanui 99/3 (N.
