Benefit for students
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. An emergency unemployment benefit would be made available for full-time university students unable to obtain work during the long summer vacation, Mr G. Clarke, education vicepresident of the University Students’ Association, said. Mr Clarke said the association had been informed of the benefit by the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr King). .It would be open to full-time students dependent on earning their support during the vacation and for whom the Department of Labour could not obtain jobs. The Minister had said that the benefit would take into account the over-all financial circumstances of applicants and the ability of parents to provide support. The association welcomed I the promise of the benefit but was concerned at the conditions, Mr Clarke said. A relaxation would be sought from the Minister, who would also be asked to extend the benefit to secondary school leavers intending to take up full-time university atwiy.
