$11m profit by Qantas

The Australian international airline, Qantas, made a net profit of SAustll.lm in the 1973-74 financial year, according to the annual reort, tabled in the Australian Parliament in Canberra. The airline set new traffic and revenue records. It carried 1.2 m passengers—an increase of 32.4 per cent on the previous year, and earned $310.8m-—a 25.3 per cent increase. The revenue-seat factor rose to 61.9 per cent, which is the highest since Qantas began using jets in 1959. The chairman (Sir Donald Anderson) gave a warning against potential cost increases of s7Bm for fuel and wages alone in 1974-75, and said there was little likelihood of matching the 1973-74 results. In a separate message to staff Sir Donald predicted that 1974-75 would see an operating loss for the airline of between ssm and s6m. He added that after allowing for dividends, interest, and exchange gains, Qantas was expected to remain profitable over all, or to break even.
