Women’s easy victory
The Canterbury women’s softball team did not have to use its last turn at bat when it easily beat Hutt Valley, 8-2, in the early game at English Park yesterday.
Canterbury showed its superiority immediately and scored three runs after quickly dismissing the first three Hutt Valley batters in the first innings.
S. Carroll walked to first base, stole second, advanced to third on a bunt by M. Lee, and scored on a sacrifice by R. Storer. Lee got home on an error and B. Clark was hit in by L. Watts. Canterbury went further ahead, 6-0, in the bottom of the third innings when B. Clark, P. Wyatt, and Watts scored, and completed its run-getting in the sixth. Hutt Valley’s only runs came in the top of the sixth innings when Canterbury was forced into errors allowing S. Ahern and S. Tidswell to score. OUTSTANDING The outstanding Canterbury batter was L. Watts, who made three of her team’s seven hits, including a lovely three-bagger in the fifth innings.
Both teams scored seven hits, but Canterbury’s superior base-running and errors by Hutt Valley in the field enabled the home side to score six more runs than its opponents. For Canterbury Storer faced 17 batters and gained one strike-out and conceded four hits to E. Winitana, E. Smith, L. Riwaka, and S. Ahern. The remaining 11 batters face.d M. Rhodes, who had one strike-out and gave up three hits to Ahern, Tidswell and C. Meihana.
For Hutt Valley Meihana faced 34 batters, gaining five strike-outs and giving up four walks and seven hits to Watts, Lee, Storer, Clark, and Wyatt.
