Three wins in row for Cardiff Lass

Cardiff Lass, ridden by Bruce Anderson (Gore), thrilled the large crowd when she jumped two clear rounds to win the Ballantyne Grand Prix competition, the feature jumping event at the Show yesterday.

It was Cardiff Lass’s third win out of three events at the show. Her winnings in F.E.I, events to date amount now to $4770. There were four clear rounds over the long, testing course of 15 numbered fences, but with a treble and two doubles. 19 fences in all. The clear rounds were by Miss R. McCall on Dylan Mrs J. Hay on Fli Hi. Cardiff Lass, and Mrs J. Hutton on Watutsi. It was bad luck for Miss K. McHugh, riding The Shah, when she was eliminated through taking the wrong course, as The Shah had been jumping very well throughout the show The course was raised for the second round—and the triple bar the brick wall, and the treble looked most formidable. Dylan, first of the clear rounds

to go, had four faults, followed by Fli Hi. which had two rails down and a stop for 11. Cardiff Lass followed, and with some clever jumping was clear. Watutsi. the last to go. got into trouble at the treble, which put him out of the running. The final placings were Cardiff Lass. Dylan (four faults), Kisema, ridden by Mrs A. Chaffey. which had four faults in

the first round and four faults and a quarter in the second, in third place, followed by Hi Fi (11 faults).

HUNTERS The jumping in “The Press” open hunter competition was of an even standard, the placegetters being very close. The winning round was by Juanita Banana, ridden by Mrs R. R. Bain, The second was Mortland (R. Rutherford) and third,Mooree (E. O’Sullivan). Mooree was then awarded the hunter championship, and was described by the judge (Mr A. M. Fraser) as a good type whose jumping had been consistent throughout the show. The Shah, ridden by Miss K. McHugh, which won the Renown Challenge Cup and the wire jump, was reserve champion. The J. H. Muirhead challenge trophies for the best lady rider and the best gentleman rider were won by Miss A. Lemon and I. Bell The champion light-weight hack was won by Fantasy, a quality thoroughbred by Greek God. owned and ridden by Miss J. Palmer (Rangiora). Fantasy won the maiden hack, the lady’s hack, and the light-weight hack classes. By Chance, an attractive bay by Jekyll, was reserve champion.

Mon Amour ridden by Mrs W. G. King (Winton) was awarded the champion hack, after winning the 13st class, with Nightcall, which was reserve champion last year, again taking the reserve ribbon

The quality of the hacks was good, said the judge (Mr Fraser), the top horses being well schooled and well ridden. By Chance, ridden by Miss G. Dunn, and Mon Amour, ridden by Mrs King, the winners of the two paced and mannered classes were judged for the Bethell Challenge Salver for the best-paced and mannered hack on the grounds. After both horses had worked individually, finishing with a gallop, the salver was awarded to By Chance.

SADDLE PONIES ’ T Rum bidden by Miss c J. Puklowski (Nelson), the chain- ■ pion pony up to 14.2 hands, was s a really outstanding pony which i did everything that was asked . of it. said the judge (Mrs A. M. I Fraser. Gisborne). Once again, the atmosphere of the busy ring had been just too much for i some ponies, which would have s been higher placed if they had . worked properly. The reserve ’ champion was last year’s chamWord, ridden by Miss , V. Willis. ‘ Once again, the manners of some Group B ponies affected - their chances, said the judge • (?* rs , 5T Wilson. Palmerston - North), but she was very thrilled • with the champion pony, Pyra- > mid. ridden by Miss C. Mahony. Pyramid had moved very well and had excellent manners, the : judge said. The reserve champion m Group B was B. Jenkins . and S. McDonald’s Kimberley. , Another success came for the 3 Mahony family when Debonaire, . won his seventy-fourth cham- . pionship. Debonaire was a grand t & p ?» aid the 3 ud ge (Mrs C. Cork, Pokeno), and was a superb mover, with excellent manners j throughout. Reserve champion was the winner of the 12 hands class, Kuriheka Comedian, ridden by lan Johns. ; The supreme champion pony, - judged by the judge of the hacks, Mr Fraser, was Bacardi Rum, which again worked really > well. HARNESS CLASSES It was a successful show for ! Lilley Bros (Methven) in the - harness section, which showed I an increase of entries this year ! J. S. Lilley’s Starlifter was i champion harness pony up to : 13.2 hands, with C. I and L I i Peter’s Firebreak, reserve , champion. J. S. Lilley also won the champion pony up to 14.2 hands with Bossy, a pony which is going very well. Reserve . champion went to the Bush-Clifton family’s Midnight. Fleetfoot, owned by R. B. and J. R. Lilley, was judged the champion harness horse from J S. Lilley’s Captivation. The increased interest in the harness section has come through the formation of the Canterbury Harness Society six months ago. The society, which organised the driving exhibition at the show, plans to hold field days soon. Once again, the action classes were a grand sight, when with more space the harness horses and ponies could reallv show their paces. The winner of the best-actioned cob or pony not over 13 hands was 'the BushClifton family’s Firebrigade The 14.2 hands class was won by C. I. and L. I. Peter’s Firebreak.
