South Island lure
Rivers and Lakes ot the South Island. By George Ferris. Heinemann. 50 pp. Zane Grey can bear some of the blame for the comparative lack of attention paid to the South Island by overseas anglers, according to Mr Ferris. Long ago he wrote of NewZealand as an anglers’ El Dorado, but his tales were of Taupo and the Rotorua conservancy. Since then Mr Ferris, one of New Zealand’s best known anglers, has done much to correct the impression that the anglers’ El Dorado lies north of Cook Strait His latest guide to the rivers and lakes of the South Island, which he knows well, has been designed to persuade overseas anglers to spend some time in this part of New Zealand. An earlier anglers’ guide to the South Island was a brochure which gave only basic information for fishing tourists. “Rivers and Lakes of the South Island” is more comprehensive. It packs into 50 pages information about rods, lines, flies, transport, accommodation, and the best times for fishing. Mr Ferris believes it is a tragedy that so many overseas anglers are lured to Taupo and Rotorua. His handysized South Island lure, if circulated in the right quartets, should be taken by more overseas anglers, and also quite a few North Islanders.
