After a fortnight of the campaign in the city the haul included: Enough cyanide to kill more than 5000 people. Bottles of strychnine, including one holding enough to kill 20 people. Bottles of arsenic and a poisonous weedkiller. I Ampoules of heroin ready for) injection. Cartons of thalidomide tab-i lets. Some of the dangerous drugs left lying around homes were so old they have been sent to museums. The chemists called police in to supervise destruction of more than three and a half tons of dangerous medicines. So far 139,000 tablets and capsules have been handed in and more are arriving every day. Some were issued on pre-war prescriptions and many were in an advanced state of decay. One bottle dated from the 19305.
