Former Soviet envoy dies

(S.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MOSCOW. A former Soviet ambassador to China and the United i States, Mr Alexander Panyushkin, has died, the Communist Party newspaper, “Pravda,” reported. He was 70. An obituary signed by top Soviet leaders, including the party leader (Mr Leonid Brezhnev) said that Mr Panyushkin, who died after a long illness, had been an example of selfless service to the Communist Party and the Soviet people.

He was wartime ambassador to pre-revolutionary China from 1939 to 1944, and returned for another year as Moscow’s envoy to Peking in 1952-53. At the height of the Cold War, from 1947-1952, Mr Panyushkin was the Soviet Union’s representative in Washington.
