The duties of the officer will be mainly in N.M.R. Spectroscopy and will include running spectra, some maintenance of spectrometers, collaboration on development of techniques, and the guidance of technical staff in the operation of spectrometers. Both pulsed and c.w. techniques are used with on-line computer control. Supervision of the operation of an E.P.R. spectrometer will also be required. The School has good electronic and mechanical workshop facilities. Direction of this School service is by a member of the academic staff to whom the appointee would be responsible. A tertiary technical or university qualification and extensive experience in N.M.R. spectroscopy are essential; a practical knowledge of electronics is highly desirable, and the appointee should be able to interact well with other technical and academic staff. Appointment will be in the Department of Linguistics (Head: Professor R. M. W. Dixon) and will be from early 1975. Applicants should have a sound general background in all areas of modem linguistics. For one of these posts any area of research specialisation will be acceptable; for the other post specialisation in sociolinguistics and/or phonetics (including acoustic phonetics) is looked for.
