Alan killed in Midlands blast
. (N Z.P A-Reuter—Copyright) ( COVENTRY (England), t November 15. Police believe that a * man blown to pieces in ■ an explosion near a city « centre telephone ex- t change in Coventry last night had been planting the bomb. ! After the blast, another I man ran away but was cap- ! tured by enraged drinkers 1 who emerged from a nearby tavern. Early today he was i still being questioned by the police, who said that they had previous knowledge of I him and the dead man. The explosion extensively! damaged the telephone exchange. It was one of three! in the Midlands during the; evening. Earlier a girl planted a* bomb in the entrance of a; Royal Air Force Association! Club in Northhampton, j before speeding away in a'
car. No one was hurt. The club, used mainly by ex-ser-vicemen, was empty at the time. The third blast was at the headquarters of the Conservative Party Association in Solihull about 10 miles south of Coventry. No one was injured. Last night’s explosions came after a wave of bomb attacks in the Midlands. Among the targets have been the British Minister of sport (Mr Denis Howell) and two magistrates. The West Midlands assistant chief constable (Mr Maurice Buck) early today warned the public to stay on their guard. The fact that no warnings I were given k 1 to speculation that last night’s bombs ’were planted by an extreme ! Left-wing group calling itself Red Flag 74. This group has claimed responsibility for three recent ! explosions at taverns freiquented by off-duty service|men.
