Safe-driving award

Fourteen young farmers from the northern half of the South Island took part in the tractordriving competition yesterday. The final was judged in the ring by Mr G. Robson, of the National Safety Association, and a representative of the Young Farmers’ organisation. The three finalists, M. Costello and R. Jordan (Marlborough) and A. Geary (Timaru), carried out several manoeuvres with two tractors lent by the International Harvester Company, Ltd.

working on a points system for time and slight driving faults, the men were required to back a four-wheeled trailer and use the hydraulic equipment to push a small ball and to drop a brick into a ring from a raised bucket.

M. Costello won the event, and was presented with a $2O cash prize and a miniature trophy of a tractor. Mr Geary was second and Mr Jordan third. The competition was sponsored by the National Safety Association to promote the safe use of farm tractors.
