From judo — to yachting

(By

J. O. COFFEY)

A former national women’s judo champion, Mrs Elaine Bryson, enjoyed success in a quite unrelated sport yesterday when she assisted her husband. Des, to victory in the Charteris Bay Cup yachting event.

The Brysons were one crew of only two that completed the course in frustrating conditions. Twenty-six crews started.

The Mark Foy race began in a light southerly breeze and continued for 3hr 45min as the wind varied and competitors received an additional drenching from a ! heavy shower. Des Bryson’s experience as a former place-getter in Canterbury and South Island ! Finn championships enabled | him to make good use of the ■handicap advantage he had over the other 470-cla.ss skippers, N. England and P. Lester.

However the Brysons had been trailing the brothers, I. and N. Jackson, when a mis-; understanding of the course led to the Jacksons with-1 drawing their R-class Unique. Apparently they did not realise that they were in

the lead and had only to complete a run from a buoy off Church Bay and then .sail to the finish via Anderson’s Mark. RUNNER UP i With the Jacksons out of; (the running, another two-j (man design, Sagitta — a J.C.I Iwith E. L. Snowden at the 'helm and M. Mclntosh as; Ifor’ard hand — was the run-ner-up, and only other} official finisher. Two Sabres filled the top; positions in the Noel Dickey Trophy contest for catamarans. T. Koller, starting from; 70 minutes, had about 9 min-1 ;utes to spare over R. 8.l I Scott, with Miss S. Curry (next in her Paper Tiger. It was ironic that a lack of wind should have such a' ; detrimental influence on i these events. The Chatteris I Bay club had planned to] have sailing schools on Sat-! 'urday and yesterday morniing, when the gus*.s were; !too forecful for inj experienced yachtsmen to handle. Results:— Charteris Bay Cup <26 started,. —Fusee d’Or. 470 iD.
