Roger Sharpe, of New Brighton (centre, front), winner of the Christchurch Harrier Club’s 26 mile 385 yard open marathon on Saturday, shares a joke with club-mates as they round a bend before leaving Queen Elizabeth II Park at the start of the race. Others in the picture are, from left to right: M. Morrison (Presbyterian), at back, J. O’Brien, M. Radcliffe (hands above head), V. Sykes (Christchurch), the third placegetter, and A. McLaren. Sharpe was hit by a car during the race but continued and won. O’Brien, Sharpe, and McLaren were all running their first marathons, and Sykes had a personal best time. O’Brien’s run was the best marathon performance by a junior in New Zealand.
