> Commenting on Govern-p ment measures to hold 1 Spending. Mr Spence sug-i Sgested that greater controls I • should be placed on non-b i essential items. ; He also wondered if the ; Government, in the light, of i I the present situation, might' ! reconsider the use of acquisition to bring stability to ! the wool sector of the farming industry. ’ Mr Spence was one of: ; those who attended the i meeting called by the Govlernment in Wellington on j Wednesday. I “I am disappointed that i there was not more emphaIsts placed on the need to
reimpose more controls, through import licensing particularly on non-essential, items. I certainly do not say that there should be more controls on the import of capital equipment for farm-' ing and raw materials for industry,” he said. Mr Spence said that the Prime Minister had indicated that an increase in import; controls was a somewhat , sluggish method of bringing about greater liquidity, and; that the Government had not taken any urgent measures? But Mr Spence did not discount the possibility that there would be quite severe import controls within six to ' nine months.
