Reaction against the criticism by a group of Christchurch parents about pro* posed human-development and human-relationship programmes in schools has led to the formation of a national Responsible Information Association.
The new association, based in Wellington, supports the free discussion of moral questions in schools and aims to demonstrate the amount of public support for allowing teachers and others to face up to problems facing society.
. An association spokesman (Mr P. McCombs) said that while the new group agreed with the Christchurch-based Concerned Parents Association that parents should take an interest in what was being taught in schools and have a greater say in what was taught, it did not believe in burying problems by ignoring their existence. “Instead of trying to deal with the effects of ignorance such as broken marriages, unhappy children, and abortion, the members of the new association want a public examination of the causes,” Mr McCombs said.
