RANGIORA SHOW WELL UP TO EXPECTATIONS

The Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association had its second most successful show, when the event ended on Saturday.

Excluding the flowers, the •‘Rangiora Show" had a record of 3646 entries for a normal .show, a figure exceeded by only the 1966 centennial show.

In spite of the biting wind and later overcast sky, spectators turned out in surprisingly large numbers to provide a record gate for an ordinary show. The attendance was probably very similar to last year but helped by slightly increased charge,?; the takings of $1323 were up by nearly $2OO and were more than $4O better than the previous record, although still well behind the $2067 for the centennial show. Horses double Entries soared to 1845 in the horse section, with 900 in the pony classes, resulting in these competitions being extended over the full Friday as well. To cope with the record field of 76 in the .sheep dog trials meant a 7.30 a.m. start on the Friday. Generally, the dogs put on a wonderful display, although in a couple of cases they had the added difficulty of mastering fractious sheep, turned “wild” by the unaccustomed presence of the large crowd around the arena. The jumping course was considered the most demanding at an A. and P. .show, apart from Christchurch, for the last few years and, surprisingly, there were 10 clear rounds, a tribute to the high standard of the course planning, the competitors, and the lift provided by the ground conditions. The winner of the Table A event, Miss P. Parsons, on Ringo, gave an outstanding performance of clean jumping. Stock classes In mc.st cases exhibits in the stock classes ranged from a satisfactory to a very high standard, although in some cases judges would have liked more entries or a bigger range of exhibitors. The pig judge (Mr P. T. Neal, of Rai Valley) was pleased with the increased number of pig entries, contrasting with the trend in the industry, where the numbers “are declining because of costs.” The quality of the top pigs was especially close. The top pens of prime lambs were of a high standard but a lot were lacking bloom, said the judge (Mr B. J. Brownie, of Akaroa). A lot of lambs had to be transferred to other classes because of overweight, probably from being weighed too) early in the week. Fine Jersey The champion Jersey cow, the three year old Pineleigh Regal Pear, entered by R. W. Frost and Son and Skurr was a particularly good cow and would be hard to beat at the Royal Show at In-1 vercargill, although there ; was very little between it; and the reserve champion, D J. Martyn’s Silverlea; Designs Raema, said the I judge (Mr C. J. Brooks, of Karamea). This was born out when} Silverlea Designs Raema; was chosen as the over-all‘ champion dairy cow. J. J. 1 and J. A. Geddes gained the> over-all reserve champion award, with Tahora Linmack Lara, the champion Friesian cow, which was the Friesian champion a week ago at Ellesmere. The Friesian judge (Mr L. A Dickie) said the quality,; especially in the female.;, was up to the usual high Canterbury standard, but the number of male entries was disappointing. ‘■.Manners lacking’ The number of Corriedales . was disappointing but those! put forward were a credit to) the breed, said the judge (Mr K. V. Hood, Rakaia). While the saddle cobs; were strong in numbers, j; some unfortunately were; sadly lacking in manners,! said' the judge (Mrs E. , Chamberlain, of Timaru).), The over-all quality was good, however, with C. R.J Peter’s champion harness ; j pony, Firebreak, outstanding. !■ Wool entries in the regis-; tered breeders section were of a high standard, although some were showing the;' effects of the recent wet:l conditions, said the judge' I (Mr J. Devine, of Christ-!, church). The champion fleece H was an outstanding adult J fleece of very good style and;] character. Entries in the: commercial sections were a ' little disappointing in ’ quality. ! i The' official party in the, grand parade included the: show president (Mr G. P.| Mclntosh), the Parliamentary:’ Under-Secretary for Agricul- 1 ture (Mr B. G. Barclay), the;' member of Parliament for,, the district (Mr T. K. Burke); ■ and the two vice-presidents 1 (Messr.s D. M. Wyllie and C.!j I. Peter). Results: — j ’ Championships < HORSES Harness horse.—H. W. Baki lag'n’s Lady Bracken. J Harness cob.—Bush and Clifton • 1 families’ Firecrest. v Harness pony.—C.
