Sport move welcomed
(.V.Z. Press Association? WELLINGTON. The decision by the South, African Government to allow multi-racial soccer at a club level was a move in the right direction, said the president of the Southern Africa Friends Association (Lieutenant-Colonel A. C. R. Elderton). The move brought soccer into line with athletics. In his statement, Colonel Elderton said that the, decision was connected with the fact that soccer and athletics were sports ini which whites, coloureds, I Bantu and Asians all took: part. "Other sporting activities are still restricted to those who enjoy them, for example hockey (white, and Asians). Rugby (whites and coloureds),” he said. “The Bantu only play Rugby for political purposes when a few run around the field to be photographed; they do not. like the game, as opposed to soccer which is played by Bantu of every age.”
