Pay rise for black miners

<N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) ■ JOHANNESBURG. , The minimum pay for novice underground workers in South Africa’s goldmines is to be raised by 33 per cent, the Chamber of Mines says. Individual mining firms — which set their own rates above the minimum — are reviewing the pay scales of their African workers, and the new, higher rates will be announced in due course. Novice workers will now receive a minimum of 1.60 rand ($1.70) a shift, or 41.60 rand ($44.25) a month. Black goldminers receive free food and accommodation. There was a similar 33 per cent rise last June. About 75 per cent of South Africa’s black goldminers now come from outside the republic, and the Chamber of Mines says that it will advertise on South African radio to draw the attention of local blacks to the rapidly-improv-ing pay and conditions.
