SUTCH CASE

Statement defended, I (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. The Attorney-General (Dr Finlay) denied in Parliament today that his recent comments on the Sutch case were prejudicial to the interests of justice. Questioned by Mr W. L. Young (Nat, Miramar), Drj Finlay said that the law re-| quired the Attorney-General! to give consent to proceed-; ings under the Official' Secrets Act. and in announc-| ing his decision on thei matter he had given his reasons for making the de-! cision. He considered that his! statement was not prejudicial. It was the custom in legal matters for reasons for a decision to be given. Answering further questions, Dr Finlay said that he had carefully weighed his words and had used them with discretion. In Dunedin the Otago District Law Society “deplored” the statement given by the Attorney-General at ! the time he gave his consent; to the prosecution of Dr Sutch. ■ I No statement was required and doing so was beyond the proper function of’ the Attorney-General, the society said.
