Drug ring sentences

A Paris court has sentenced eight men to a total of 64 years in prison for involvement in a drug trafficking ring dubbed the “Latin Connection.”
Two of the men are still on the run. The other six were arrested in November, 1972, as they prepared to take 1281 b of heroin out of France to Mexico in false-bottomed suitcases. A ninth man, said to be the head of the ring, died in prison soon after being arrested. He was named as Umberto Mariles Cortes, a 60-year-old retired Mexican general. The eight men were ordered to pay a fine of nine million francs (about SNZI.S million) — five times the value of the heroin seized. The heaviest sentence was handed down to Miguel Descargues-Riotorto, a 32-year-cld Uruguayan, said to be the organiser of the operation. He was gaoled for 16 years, including one year for using a false identity.
