Professor of education
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. Dr Marie M. Clay has been appointed professor and head of the Education Department at Auckland University, the first woman to gain a full professorship at the university. Dr Clay, who is an associate professor in the department, will take over from Professor R. Winterbourn, who retires at the end of the year. Professor Clay’s research into children’s reading failure is world known. She has published books for teachers on the subject, and has also studied the development of oral language by children of different ethnic groups. She has also done research and taught on the prevention of mental and learning disorders in children and adolescents.
