First loss for Larsen
(N.Z.P.A.-ReuteT —Copyright) MANILA. E. Vashiukov of the Soviet Union beat B. Larsen of Denmark in the SUSIS,OOO Marlboro chess tournament of grandmasters in Manila yesterday. The 41-year-old Vashiukov, playing black, scored a full point on the forty-ninth move of a Sicilian defence, with a brilliant sacrifice of a knight midway in the adjourned game to open Larsen’s king’s file and expose his queen and other major pieces. It was Larsen’s first defeat in the tournament. The 39-year-oid Danish grandmaster, however, still leads the 15-tnan field after seven rounds with 5.5 points — a full point ahead of Vashiukov and Lubomir Kavalek of the United States.
