Trees may be saved
Special steps may be taken by he incoming Geraldine Borough Council to preserve trees. The retiring council suggested that it study the Town and Country planning bulletin, “the preservation of trees and bush in urban areas,” and recent legislation with a view to introducing a register of trees.
At present only one tree in Geraldine is listed for preservation in town planning ordinances. This is the historic totara planted by Samuel Hewlings, Geraldine’s first resident and Timaru’s first Mayor, to mark the birth of the first child of European descent in South Canterbury.
