STUDY OF FISHING
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. Messrs M. R. Middleton, of Nelson, and M. B. Millett, of Auckland, have been awarded the Mobil fishing industry scholarships for 1975. Announcing the awards, which are financed by the Fishing Industry Board and Mobil Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, the board chairman (Mr M. M. N. Corner) said that they would enable Messrs Middleton and Millett to pursue studies of modern fishing techniques relevant to the development of the New Zealand industry. Mr Middleton, a qualified coastal fishing skipper, will spend three months in Britain studying developments in bottom and mid-water trawling and the use of electronic aids. He will also get practical experience of the new techniques at sea on vessels operating out of United Kingdom ports.
Mr Millett, a graduate of the Manukau Technical Institute’s fishing trainee scheme, will travel to the West Coast of North America to study pair trawling and purse and drum-seining methods, and to Japan, where he will study modern techniques being used by the Japanese industry.
