School rebuilding presents problems

The Christchurch Boys’ High School authorities are posed with the problem of accommodating many of 1102 pupil? during a SI .5m rebuilding project at the school. The main block of the school in Straven Road will be demolished and replaced by the time the school celebrates its centenary' in

1981, but no plans have yet been made for rehousing pupils during the demolition and rebuilding. The old block, of 17 classrooms, seven laboratories, and the old library, was built in 1925. Demolition work will not involve the hall or the main staircase to the halt Christchurch Boys’ High

School has 28$ acres of land, some of which could be used for temporary classrooms to house pupils during the rebuilding. However, this plan would be expensive, and alternative buildings at the primary division of the Christchurch Teachers’ College might be vacant after 1978. Their use would allow contractors a free hand to demolish and rebuild a large part of the school unimpeded by normal school activities. Another plan being considered is lor the demolition of the old building in stages, and rebuilding section by section.
