A positive answer
Members of the Picton Borough Council who declined petitions calling for a referendum on the proposed fluoridation of the town water supply were given on Saturday a positive answer cf the electors' views on the issue—four of them lost their seats. If they required further confirmation of the town mood, they found it in the return of four of the five candidates put up as a ticket by the Picton Democratic Rights Committee. They found it again in the re-election of three of the councillors who supported a referendum on this contentious subject. The sitting Mayor of Picton (Mr C. W. Bryant), who strongly favoured fluoridation of the town water supply without referendum, was returned. Only Cr A. J. Beaton, who had sided with the Mayor, was returned, but as the eighth choice of the electors for the nine member council.
