All sitting councillors returned at Timaru

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, Oct. 13. The 10 city councillors who sought re-elec-tion to the Timaru City ■Council, there having been 16 candidates for 12 seats, were returned on Saturday. “It was an average poll,” said the returning officer (Mr D. lE. Pearson). There was no election for the Timaru mayoralty, Mr C. R. JlerIvey having been elected unopposed. It is unlikely that the candidate who polled highest among the four unsuccessful candidates for the City Council Mr J. S. Mills, will unseat Mr J, M. Bishop, who recorded the lowest number of votes among the successful contestants, giving him a slender lead over Mr Mills of 51 votes. As has been the case for several terms, Mr S. R. Bennett, a former mayor, and deputy mayor in the previous administration, topped the council poll, recording 6579 votes. Mrs H. D. L. Mclver, only the i third woman to have been I elected to the City Council, and ■one with an impressive record jof community service, polled second highest, with 6039 votes. Another newcomer, Mr D. T. Crowe, the driving force behind the culmination of the city’s sports stadium project, gained 5968 votes, the third highest. The former Town Clerk. Mr J. A. Goodwin, who made an I unsuccessful bid for the City I Council, lost his seat on the South Canterbury Hospital Board, but defeated a sitting member. Mr R. S. Frapwell, on the Power Board.

There were eight candidates for the five Timaru City seats on the Hospital Board, two contenders for a city position on the South Canterbury Catchment Board, and four candidates for three seats on the Power Board. STRATHALLAN COUNTY

Four ridings—Teniuka. Hadlow, Otipua and Mount Peel-Rangi-tata la close result) were contested in Strathallan County. Several elections were also necessary for county representatives on Soutli Canterbury ad hoc bodies. Three candidates stood for the two Geraldine division seats on the Timaru Harbour Board, and there was also an election in the Levels division. The Levels division of the South Canterbury Catchment Board was contested, and 13 candidates sought four seats on the Geraldine Licensing Trust. Five nominations for five seats on the Winchester CountyTown Committee will go forward for appointment by Strathallan County Council. There were 17.290 eligible voters in Timaru City About 500 special votes have yet to be considered. In Strathallan County, there were 5089 eligible voters — a high proportion when compared with the total population of 9200— including 667 on the supplementary rolls, a high number brought about by the distribution of circulars in the Levels division, the national advertising campaign, and the enrolment of 18-year-olds, The elections in Strathallan County were conducted by postal vote, the percentage of those who voted being 71 per cent. “This is regarded as satisfactory, bearing in mind that there were not riding issues in every riding,” said the returning officer (Mr J J. Safey’i. Special votes "ill not affect the result in Otipua riding, where Mr C Jackson defeated Mr McL. H. Gray, a former chairman of the old Levels Countv Council, bv only two votes.' In the Mount PeelRangitata riding, however, where seven votes senarate two contestants for one seat, the issue is in doubt. WAIMATE MAYORALTY Waimate has a new Mayor. Mr A. F. McLay. aged 54. a public accountant. ' Mr McLay defeated another sitting councillor. Mr M. J. Leonard, by 1023 votes to 450. TIMARU CITY Mayoralty C. R. Hervey, elected unopposed. City Council •W.
