Standing in praise of Kiri

f.V.Z. Pre.u Assn—Copynpht) SYDNEY, Oct. 13. The New Zealand soprano. Kiri Te Kanawa, was given a , standing ovation when I she made her first Australian appearance with the N.Z.B.C. Symphony i Orchestra in the Sydney Opera House last night. Miss Te Kanawa, who sang Strauss’s four last songs, brought the fullybooked concert hall to its feet, and was not allowed to leave the stage until she had given an encore. The New Zealand Orchestra was also well received, and it, too, received a standing ovation at the end of the concert, as it had done on the first night of its Sydney season on Friday night. Last night’s concert will ■, be repeated tomorrow night and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday the brilliant ■ voung New Zealand pianist, Michael Houstoun. will join the orchestra as guest soloist. The only trouble experienced by the orchestra in its Sydney season so far has been in successfully countering the maze of cor-! ridors under the stage.
