Cabinet approves extra teachers
(By dur education reporter) Fears that an extra 200 secondary teachers might not be appointed in .time for next year have been quashed by a •Cabinet decision.
The annual conference of je Post Primary Teachers' issociation last month exressed concern that the Ktra teachers might not be ppointed in time for refaced pupil-teacher ratios to e brought into effect in 975. .The conference questioned' he Minister of Education Mr Amos) about the delay B announcing official pproval for the staff extenions, and reminded him that he working party report on ncreased staff had been Citde by July 25. A meeting between Mr fanos and two executive tiembers of the P.P.T.A.
made little difference to the situation. Yesterday’s Cabinet decision will mean that all extra positions will be advertised in the November 1 Education Gazette—in time to allow appointments to be made for next year. The general secretary of the P.P.T.A. (Mr B. A. Webster) said from Wellington yesterday that the Cabinet decision would be a relief to the country’s secondary schools. Many schools would have to make changes in their organisation for next year, he said, but no important problems were likely; the extra teachers were urgently needed.
