REGIONAL AID
Coast plants! eligible (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. Companies which bought and ran the factories of Matai Industries, Ltd, would be entitled to apply for regional-development assistance and for freight subsidies, the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Freer) told Parliament today. Replying to a question from the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Taiboys), Mr Freer said that Matai Industries would also have been entitled to these forms of assistance, but it had been asked to supply certain figures, and had failed to do so. Neither officials from the Department of Trade and (Industry, nor an outside firm of specialists had been able to supply the figures, he said. The directors of Matai Industries had no authority to impose conditions on the Government, Mr Freer said. But he repeated the Government’s earlier assurances that its guarantees would be upheld.
