Marriage guidance work increases
The counselling caseload at the Christchurch Marriage Guidance Council had increased during the last year, said the chairman of the council (Mr R. D. Connack), in his annual report on Tuesday evening.
However, he said, the conciliation caseload had been reduced by a more adequate screening of cases before reference to the council. “There is much ferment in society on the subject of marriage, and what the marriage partners expect from it. There is a greater awareness of the changing role of women in society, and this in itself is demanding many marriage partners to look closely at the contribution that each makes to marriage,” he said. At present there are 15 full-time counsellors. Mr Cormack said that the ideal strength would be 25. Difficulties had been experienced by the council in
its education programme, he said. “There has been a need for certain kinds of work in the community for which our tutors felt inadequately trained.” He said that there was a need for education on marriage, human relationships, and sex, and it appeared that the council could do much more to fill that need.
