Aust. suspends immigration
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, Oct. 2. The Australian Government announced tonight that it had suspended temporarily its immigration programme, in a bid to ease the country’s unempluoyment problem. Migrants whose applications have been approved will still be allowed to enter the country but, in general, no more new nominations will be accepted. The Minister for Labour and Immigration (Mr Clyde Cameron) announcing the suspension, said that a review of the impact of immigration on unemployment
in Australia had emphasised the need for prompt action to ensure that the arrival of migrants did not worsen the situation. Reliable sources in Canberra say that the monthly employment figures due to be released on Sunday are expecetd to shew unemployment at a port-war record ieveL The number of people out of work increased by 16,000 during September, taking the total to about 123,000 at the end of the month. The worst previous postwar figure for the month of September was 121,300 in September 1072.
