Mr W. A. Kennedy, of Christchurch, is one of four nominations to be considered for the presidency of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at its annual conference in Wellington on October 18. A former president of the Canterbury centre, he has.
been a prominent official in both track and field and cross-country for many years. During the Commonwealth Games, he played a leading role in the organisation of the marathon. The other three contenders are Messrs A. B. Beveridge (Otago), A. L. Stevens (Wellington) and G. T. Wiggs (Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay). Mr Wiggs is the New Zealand representative on the Pacific Conference Games Committee. Two Canterbury men, Messrs B. S. Hunt (Ashburton) and V. Briedis (Christchurch), have been nominated for the New Zealand track and field selection
panel. The others are Messrs J. H. Borland (Otago), G. J. McCabe (Waikato) and A. M. Potts (Auckland). Mr Hunt is the convener of the three-man selection panel at present. Competition for the crosscountry selection panel is even stronger. There are eight nominations, including the immediate past president of the Canterbury centre, Mr J. G. Smart, of Christchurch. The only standing member of the present panel is Mr L. T. Bradshaw. The other six contenders are Messrs A. A. Jelley (Auckland), H. C. Barton (Wellington), R. Cain (Otago), E. Hutchinson (Waikato), P. Richards (West Coast North Island) and R. A. Spence (Wellington). Three are required for the panel, but there must be one representative from each island.
