ADDINGTON MARKET Prime hoggets firm; cattle easier

Prime-hogget and prime' Sheep values remained firm at the Addington market yesterday, but with an entry of 500 head, prime cattle lost much of last week’s recovery.

The steady hogget and sheep market was mainly because of small yardings. In the prime sheep section, the entry, after last week’s poor sale, was the smallest of the spring. Handy-weight steers had the best of the sale, but even so, there was not a great deal of beef fetching more than $26 per 1001 b, or 58c a kilogram. Good quality vealers maintained last week’s ratc.s, and the strength of the dairy-cattle market' was a little better.Spring lambs Spring lambs again sold well. The yarding, at 153 head, was a small one for this time of the year. Quality was good, although some of them were inclined to overfatness. On last week’s sale, the market was firm. Values were: Best lambs to $B.BO Medium lambs $7.80 to $8.20 Light lambs. $7 to $7.50. Sales of spring lambs included: J. H. M. Moorhead (Southbridge). 8 at $8.45 to $8.50; T. A. Bennett (Riverside), 26 at $8 to $8.20; E, W. Bassett (Rakaia), 2 at $7.65; Pearce Brothers (Sandv Knolls). 15 at $7.80 to $8; T F. May and Son (Balcairn) 23 at $7.50 to $8.35 Prime hoggets Prime hoggets had a firm sale, partly because the yarding at 1515 head, was much smaller than usual. Some very good quality spring-shorn hoggets were included. and these met the best inquiry. No Increment was paid for those with several months growth of wool. Values were: Best hoggets, to $10.60 Medium hoggets. $9 to $9.50. Light hoggets. $7.80 to $8.60, Leading sales of prime hoggets included: Brendean Farm (Weedons). 33 at $9.80 to $10.60; S M. Eariv (Greendale), 30 at $9.90 to $10.30. Prime sheep Prime sheep met a slightly better sale, mainly because the yarding, at 935 head was the smallest of the spring. Ewes made up the bulk of the entry. Any wethers on offer were usually in lots of fewer than half a dozen. Clearly, last week’s poor sale had induced farmers not to send much stock forward. Wethers improved by 30c to 40c, but it still remained, far from a strong sale. Values were: Shorn wethers, to $9.90. Woolly ewes, to $6.90. Best shorn ewes, to $6.20. Medium ewes. $5.50 to $6. Petrie (Rangiora). 40 at $5.80 to $6.30. Store sheiep Store sheep drew steady interest. and the market for both hoggets and breeding ewes with lambs at foot showed- some im provement. The yarding' consisted of 800 to 900 hoggets, i ind about 200 ewes, most of them with lambs at foot. Wether hoggets improved by 30e to' 40c a head. Spring-shorn hoggets ranged from $6 to $7.40. and those with a few months’ growth of wool mainly at $7 to $B. Several pens of ewe hoggets met quite brisk competitktn. sales ranging mainly from (v.lO to $B.lO, with two sales tv* $8.90. Spring-shorn Corriedales i and halfbreds made up most of the entry of about 400 head. Inquiry was good for a: small entry of ewes with lambs at foot. Values for woolly ewes with Down cross lambs ranged from $5.20 to $6 all counted, at which the market was anything if: o to a dollar a head better. Sales of store sheep incl tided: S R. Prime cattle Prime cattle had an easier sale, much of last week’s recovery being lost. The yl irding rose from 306 to 500, arid it comprised a good selection of steers of all weights.
