Perth strike: 100,000 idle
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) PERTH, (Aust.), October 1. i Industry came to a halt in Perth today, when more than 100,000 trade unionists began a 24-hour strike in protest against the Liberal State Government’s controversial Fuel and Energy 'Bill. Because of power cuts, residents of Perth tonight I faced cold meals in candlelight, and no television. ' The city’s fleet of 800 Ibuses has remained off the road, and about 32,000 , schoolchildren have had to find alternative transport to land from school. One of the parks in the city was opened to handle parking problems arising from the greatest influx of private traffic in Perth’s history. The strike has stopped most of West Australia’s heavy industry, but has had i little effect on the commercial business sector.
