WAIMATE TO STAY
(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. Declining a suggestion from the Racing Authority, the Waimate Racing Club has decided unanimously to continue to race on the Waimate course. The Authority has recommended that the Waimate Racing, Trotting, and District Hunt clubs should race at Washdyke. The Waimate Racing Club’s latest move entails a decision by its committee to use every avenue possible to impress upon the Authority that racing will continue in Waimate, and that the club will safeguard the wish of Waimate residents to hold local race meetings in their town. To achieve its objective, the club will solicit the support of all sectors — Waimate residents, other clubs, district committees, the New Zealand Racing Conference, and every other organisation or body which can assist in the fight for retention of “this very important community activity.” The immediate past president, Mr V. J. Meehan, said that the Waimate Racing Club had been in existence for almost 100 years, during which it had contributed much to racing. It was also agreed by the committee to take all steps within its power to ensure that Waimate clubs get their fair share from the amenities fund. The Racing Authority has said that if the clubs continue to race at Wai-
mate, financial assistance will not be provided to them from the amenities account towards capital expenditure.
