The resignation announcement came after a week-end of tension caused by arrests of Rightwingers by the Leftwing army officers who staged the April coup. General Costa Gomes. Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, was appointed President by the Council of State. A Presidential spokesman said General Spinola was no longer a member of the sesen-man ruling junta of senior officers. “He is only a general now,” the spokesman said. Earlier report. Page 17
