Succession in China

(N Z. Press Assn—Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept 30. The Chinese Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Hsiao Ping) has been chosen to succeed the ailing Chou En-Lai as Prime Minister, and some political analysts at the United Nations believe that a successor to Chairman Mao has also been chosen, Mr Wang Hung-Wen, aged 38, according to a report published in “Newsweek.”

The internationally-circu-lated magazine attributes its report to Western intelligence sources who have been watching a succession of talks at Mao’s hideaway in a seaside resort east of Peking It is said that high-ranking party dignitaries and provincial leaders were summoned, a few at a time, to these talks to lay the groundwork for an orderly succession.
