‘Cod war’ continues
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) REKJAVIK, Sept. 30. An Icelandic Coast Guard patrol vessel cut the trawlwires of a West German trawler and chased five others found fishing in Iceland’s disputed waters. The incident occurred shortly after midnight about 10 miles inside the 50-mile fishing limit off the Reykjanes peninsula on the south-west coast. The trawl-wires cut were those of the 1047-ton Bremerhaven trawler Seydisfjord 8X704. The five other trawlers, which sped off when the patrol ship appeared, were not identified. West Germany does not recognise Iceland’s unilateral decision of September, 1972, to widen its fishing limits from 12 to 50 nautical miles. Britain also disputed the decision but, last November, reached an interim agreement with Iceland on fishing inside the new limit.
