Pensioner cottages opened
Four pensioner cottages at Bexley have been named after the late Mr Charles Gallagher, the director of the Christchurch Technical Institute from 1969 till his death in June this year.
The cottages were officially opened by Mrs A. M. Gallagher yesterday and will be known as Charles Gallagher Place.
They were built by building apprentices from the Technical Institute under a system of adult carpentry apprenticeship training, in cooperation with the Christchurch City Council. The cottages, which each consist of a kitchen, lounge, wash-house, bathroom and a bedroom, cost $25,000. The Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) said he hoped that the co-operation between the council and the technical institute would continue, and that more units could be built.
“It is a far-sighted and humanitarian approach, getting the apprentices involved in this type of work,” he said. Mrs Gallagher said that her husband had always boasted that the door to his office was always open to everyone.
“I hope that the residents of these cottages keep their doors open to each other, and it becomes a happy little street,” she said.
