Bus firms costs soar

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. Transport operators would “go down” unless they got together, said the chairman of the Wellington City Council trading committee (Cr S. H. J. Duff) at the Bus and Coach Association’s conference last evening. ; Cr Duff said bus operators received only lip-service I from the Ministry of TransI port.

“They don’t think we are in trouble, just that we are inefficient,” he said. “The Minister talks rubbish about mini-buses and other schemes that have been proved wrong overseas.” Wellington City Council was facing a transport cost, or deficit, of $2,000,000 this year, 78 per cent of which went to wages, said Cr Duff.

Ferry repairs.—The new Cook Strait ferry Aratika is due to leave Auckland on Friday on completion of repairs. The Aratika arrived at Auckland on June 17 for repairs to a fire-damaged funnel and electrical wiring and alterations to her stabilising tanks.—(P.A.).
