Warning about harbour

The shallower waters of Lyttelton Harbour were sensitive to enrichment, and should receive an X classification as a warning of the danger, said Mrs E. K. Gardiner, giving evidence for the Mount Herbert Civic Trust to the Water Resources Council yesterday.

Mrs Gardiner said that the same trouble as had devek

oped with the Estuary could occur in the harbour. The harbour’s enclosed upper reaches were especially susceptible. They were important breeding grounds for flat-fish, and any enrichment could result in new species being introduced to compete for food. Discharges of pollutant at the seaward end of the haribour could affect the head lof the harbour.

Mrs Gardiner contended that, the classifications made [ no provision for the people . using the harbour for recreation, and that the harbour was used as a sewagedilution tank. The Government had designated coastal reserves round the harbour, and users should not be exposed to unpleasant smells such as had been noted at Charteris Bay.
