‘No income’ prediction

The president of directors of the Fruitgrowers Federation (Mr P. K. McCliskie) has predicted that cost increases will mean some growers getting no income next year. He told the annual meeting in Christchurch yesterday that the situation had prompted the federation and the Apple and Pear Board to commission a comprehensive study of the pip fruit industry. The study would look at production, marketing, payment, and capital requirements. “The true measurement of income can only be established after costs are considered and when this is done it is clear that growers’ incomes in real terms have been eroded to a serious level,” he said. Mr McCliskie said the directors were cautious about disturbing the contract of supply scheme, regulating production, and levies on new plantings until after the study being conducted by Massey College had been completed. The main cost increases incurred by growers were labour, sprays, fertilisers and fuel oil.
