Israeli Navy wards off Soviet jets

(N. Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) TEL AVIV, August 28. Soviet minesweepers opened up with water hoses on Israeli gunboats yesterday at the mouth of the Suez Canal, the Israeli Defence Minister (Mr Shimon Peres) said in Tel Aviv today. He said the two Russian minesweepers involved were part of a flotilla now clearing mines in the canal a,rea. He said they had

sailed too close to the Israeli-occupied coast of south-west Sinai, at the entrance to the Gulf of Sinai. Mr Peres did not elaborate on what the Israeli gunboat did when the minesweepers opened their hoses and splashed their small adversaries. But he did say, “Our boats, being used to gunfire, would not give up in the face of wr.ter. In the end the Russian ships turned back.”
