OARSMEN GIVE IN

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, August 13. Two Londoners who had intended to row round the world abandoned the attempt yesterday after a nightmare two-month crossing of the Atlantic. The men arrived on the Caribbean island of Santa Lucia physically fit but mentally exhausted. Most of the crossing had been in bad weather and rough seas, and they had run out of water. One of the men fell overboard, and was chased by a shark, and twice passing ships nearly ran them down.

Mr Derek King, aged 24, and Mr Peter Bird, aged 26, told their sponsors that they had abandoned their 2|-year bid to row around the world.

“We never thought that there would be so much mental strain involved in the crossing,” Mr King said. "Conditions were against us, and we were close to death a number of times.”
