Bobby calves
Sir, — It is pathetic to read of the slaughter of our potential meat trade in the form of bobby calves. We as a country cannot afford such waste. The Government should be granting an incentive to rear these animals. The New Zealand Refrigerating Company’s halfyearly report shows that the bobby calf kill was up 79 per cent in the year to June 30, while the cattle kill was down 22.4 per cent. The lamb kill was down 15.2 per cent, and the wether and hogget kill was down 40.3 per cent. It’s quite likely that the meat prospects in two years time will be good, when we have little to sell and surplus plant to process it. — Yours, etc., E. J. FREEMAN. August 10, 1974.
